Remembering North Island MLA Colin Gabelmann
He is remembered for pioneering privacy laws, lowering the voting age to 18 and helping secure protected areas across North Island.
Former North Island MLA and Attorney General Colin Gabelmann died on October 3 at age 82 following a brief illness, having served the region from 1979 to 1996.
Gabelmann championed significant legislative reforms, including lowering the voting age to 18, pioneering Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy legislation, and helping develop a Labour Code.
In the early 1990s, Gabelmann coordinated a complex compromise for the Beaver Lodge Lands in Campbell River, establishing the Beaver Lodge Trust Renewal Act to preserve the 1,000-acre parcel.
Advocating for the Island Highway, Gabelmann successfully restored the four-lane scope; former Campbell River Mayor Jim Lornie credited him for the achievement.
Colleagues remembered Gabelmann as a mentor and leader of great integrity, whose life was anchored by a nearly 50-year partnership with Robin Geary.
