Rare Royal Mint 50p coin selling for more than 400 times its face value
The rare Royal Mint coin sold for more than 400 times its face value, and thousands are still believed to be in circulation.
A rare Royal Mint "Blue Peter" 50p coin recently sold for £220 on eBay after attracting 10 bids, with another example previously fetching £286.
Designed by Florence Jackson, the "Blue Peter" 50p was first released in 2009 ahead of the London Olympics. Although around 20,000 were minted, they were never officially released into general circulation.
Originally sold for £1.09, the coins are now highly sought after among collectors. Experts say anyone with old 50p coins should check their designs carefully, as rare editions can be worth far more than their face value.
Collectors believe many "Blue Peter" coins have since entered everyday use, sitting unnoticed in loose change across the UK. The 50 pence piece has become the most valued and collected coin.
Rarity remains the fundamental attraction for collectors, with the Royal Mint tracking high-value designs including the "Olympic Goalball" 50p, which had 1,615,500 minted. Scarcity directly determines collector value.
