Forecasters Warn of Possible Thunderstorms Across Essex From TOMORROW
The Met Office said low pressure will bring showers and thunderstorms, ending the latest heatwave as fire crews continue to respond to wildfires.
The Met Office forecasts a transition to cooler, wetter conditions across the UK, with meteorologist Tom Morgan indicating the south will experience the "most changeable week" since the end of June.
High pressure driven by a northern jet stream caused the fifth heatwave, with Kew Gardens, London, recording the year's hottest temperature of 38.1C last Thursday, prompting Prime Minister Andy Burnham to describe Britain as a "tinderbox."
South Wales Fire and Rescue Service reported "unprecedented demand" with 736 calls on Saturday, prompting deployment of 200 military personnel; a major blaze in Stourbridge, West Midlands, destroyed 19 homes.
A yellow heat health alert remains in effect until 9am today for London, the South East, and South West, while the Met Office warned of a "risk of thunder and hail" from Wednesday, August 19.
West Midlands Fire Service confirmed cordons have been "significantly lifted" as residents return home, while fresher conditions with rain and thunderstorms are expected this week as northerly winds dominate.
