Pubs Brace for Higher Pint Prices as Chancellor Faces Calls to Freeze Alcohol Duty
The Chancellor is expected to announce a 3.9% alcohol-duty increase, raising beer tax from 50p to 52p per pint.
The proposed rise could add 10p to 12p to the price of a wine bottle and 35p to a bottle of gin at 37.5% alcohol.
Drinks-Industry leaders, including Miles Beale and Emma McClarkin, urged the Government to freeze duty, citing pressure on consumers, businesses, and jobs.
The new British government, which is presenting its first budget this Wednesday, is looking for new revenue to cope with inflation and ever-increasing borrowing costs.
