Former Colchester schoolboy is the hero in inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup Final
On Monday, October 5, 2026, Indonesia defeated Thailand 4-2 on penalties to win the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta, following a 2-2 draw after extra time.
This victory ends Indonesia's nearly decade-long wait for a win over Thailand, as the teams last met on December 14, 2016, during the AFF Suzuki Cup final first leg when Indonesia won 2-1.
Former Colchester schoolboy Elkan Baggott scored in extra time and the penalty shootout, securing the title before a crowd of more than 70,000, while Thailand played with 10 men after defender Nicholas Mickelson was sent off.
President Prabowo Subianto attended the match in person, accompanied by Minister of Youth and Sports Erick Thohir and FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who had specifically invited the President to witness the tournament's closing ceremony.
Two English managers faced off in this inaugural final, with John Herdman leading Indonesia and Anthony Hudson leading Thailand, marking the first edition of the tournament under FIFA governance.
