Could Pope Leo Become First Pontiff to Vote in a U.S. Election? Here's What We Know
Will County officials said the Chicago-born pontiff remains a registered Illinois voter and requested his ballot on Oct. 3.
- On Thursday, The Will County Clerk confirmed that Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV requested a mail-in ballot for the November 3 midterm election from his residence in Vatican City.
- Pope Leo remains a registered voter at a New Lenox, Illinois, address despite leading 1.4 billion members of the Catholic Church from Vatican City. He did not renounce his U.S. citizenship upon becoming pope.
- Public records show the pontiff voted in general elections from 2012 to 2024, utilizing The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, or UOCAVA, which allows U.S. citizens abroad to vote by mail.
- Officials have not yet received Leo's completed ballot following his recent lung cancer surgery. He has previously clashed with President Donald Trump over foreign policy and immigration enforcement.
- If Leo casts his ballot before the November 3 deadline, he will become the first pope to vote in a U.S. election while serving as head of the Church, a historic first.
