NYPD Officer Fires at Man with Butcher's Knife in Lower East Side Confrontation

Officers used a taser before firing at least four times after a 911 call about a possible domestic dispute, police said.

  • On Sunday, NYPD officers fatally shot 54-year-old Wei Chan at 126 Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side after he lunged at them armed with a large butcher knife.
  • Responding to multiple 911 calls about an assault, officers entered the building and discovered a trail of blood leading up the staircase. Assistant NYPD Chief Melissa Eager stated they responded "without hesitation not knowing what was waiting for them."
  • Officers encountered Chan descending the stairs with a large butcher knife after he ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon. Authorities deployed a taser to no effect before firing, as Chan "did engage them with a large butcher knife," Eager said.
  • Cheng Chan, the suspect's 75-year-old father, suffered head lacerations and was transported to Bellevue Hospital where he is expected to survive. Four officers were treated at NewYork-Presbyterian for minor injuries.
  • Investigations by the NYPD and the New York State Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation are ongoing. Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed body-worn camera footage will be released and wished the father a "full and speedy recovery.
