New Pokémon Movie on the Way
The film marks the franchise’s first theatrical Pokémon release since 2020, with Katsuhiko Kitada directing and CloverWorks producing.
On Sunday, The Pokémon Company announced 'Pokémon: Wild Card,' a new animated feature film releasing worldwide in 2027, during the closing ceremony of the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco.
Company President and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara noted this marks the first new Pokémon movie in seven years, featuring a Trading Card Game player protagonist 'battling and striving to be a champion.'
Japanese animation studio CloverWorks will produce the film, with director Katsuhiko Kitada and character designer Akemi Hayashi heading the creative team for the upcoming project.
A teaser trailer revealed the protagonist wearing a yellow hoodie resembling Mimikyu, while messaging stating 'Coming 2027 and beyond' suggests additional franchise content may follow.
Next year will also bring the 10th generation titles 'Winds' and 'Waves,' plus the animated series 'The Misadventures of Sirfetch'd and Pichu' streaming on DisneyXD, expanding the franchise beyond film.
