Phone scam spoofing Kelowna RCMP's non-emergency line targets Canadians
Police say callers spoof the Kelowna RCMP number and seek passwords, banking details and other personal information.
The Kelowna RCMP alerted the public to an ongoing telephone scam where fraudsters spoof the detachment's non-emergency line, with individuals across Canada receiving calls from someone falsely claiming to be an RCMP officer.
Fraudsters manipulate caller ID information to appear as the Kelowna RCMP, deceiving individuals into providing sensitive personal and financial details by persuading victims to click on links and supply passwords.
The caller falsely identifies as an RCMP officer and claims police have a suspect in custody possessing the victim's information. The RCMP will not "Request passwords, banking information, or other sensitive personal information over the phone."
Anyone receiving these calls should hang up immediately and avoid engaging, Cpl advised. If unsure about a call's legitimacy, individuals should disconnect and contact their local police agency using a publicly listed phone number.
The Kelowna RCMP reminds the public that caller ID information can be manipulated and should not be relied upon as proof of identity. Fraud victims should contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre website to report incidents.
