CNA Explains: How the New Huanggang Port Will Improve Hong Kong-Mainland Connectivity
The checkpoint uses a joint clearance system that cuts walking clearance from 30 minutes to five and vehicle clearance from 10 minutes to two, officials said.
On Monday, the revamped Huanggang Port officially opened after six years of redevelopment, becoming the first checkpoint between Hong Kong and China to use a "Collaborative Inspection and Joint Clearance" system.
The "Collaborative Inspection and Joint Clearance" model integrates immigration procedures from both sides within one building, reducing clearance time from 30 minutes to five minutes for pedestrians and from 10 minutes to two minutes for vehicle drivers.
Within the first two hours of operation, 5,100 travellers and 953 vehicles crossed the boundary. Chief Secretary Eric Chan reported that e-Channel processing times reached approximately 20 seconds.
If the system's rollout "goes well," Chan said, authorities will gradually extend it to other boundary control points, enhancing cross-border efficiency.
Security Chris Tang addressed data privacy concerns last year, stating the joint clearance "will not send Hong Kong residents" data to mainland Chinese authorities, as the former Lok Ma Chau crossing has ceased operations.
