One Nation pledges open books despite costings secrecy
The minor party says a public website would track state spending and cabinet papers, but it will not publish its own policy costings.
On Monday, Victorian One Nation leader Warren Pickering pledged to track state expenditure on a public website if elected, while confirming the party will not publish its policy costings before the November 23 election.
Pickering rejected using the Parliamentary Budget Office for independent costings, claiming he would "blow the books open" rather than rely on agency projections he asserted were historically inaccurate.
Senior Labor minister Anthony Carbines criticized the stance, saying, "One Nation can't reveal any of its costings, yet it wants to set up a tracking system to manage everyone else's costings."
Monash University political scientist Zareh Ghazarian warned that withholding costings prevents voters from "comparing apples to apples" before casting ballots on November 28, limiting informed decision-making.
One Nation previously faced scrutiny when the PBO found its proposed family policies could blow out by more than $500 million, with independent costings reaching $688.7 million versus the party's $136 million estimate.
