People in Japan were swindled out of a record 324.11 billion yen ($2.1 billion) in 2025 in investment and romance scams on social media, as well as other kinds of fraud, with the amount soaring 62.8 percent from the previous year, police data showed Thursday.
Fraudulent losses in Japan are projected to reach 324 billion yen in 2025, the highest ever, due to a surge in scams via social media and AI-generated content.
The National Police Agency announced on the 12th that the total amount of damage caused by special frauds, investment frauds via social networking sites (SNS), and romance frauds that take advantage of romantic feelings will be a total of approximately 324.11 billion yen in 2025, a 62.8% increase from the previous year, setting a new record high.
