NYPD officer shot in Brooklyn, 18-year-old suspect in custody
The detective’s ballistic vest stopped the bullet, and police recovered a handgun after a foot chase and arrest, officials said.
Early Sunday, an 18-year-old male shot an NYPD detective in the back in Brooklyn's Crown Heights neighborhood, but Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Detective Robert Carroll survived because his bulletproof vest absorbed the impact.
The officers were sitting in an unmarked police vehicle at Nostrand Avenue and St. John's Place after being reassigned from a 12-hour shift for Sail4th 250 when an armed individual approached.
Three officers fired at the suspect, who was later apprehended following a foot pursuit; Commissioner Tisch noted the lack of bodycam footage, stating "presumably because it happened so quickly."
This incident occurred hours after a Saturday night shooting in Coney Island injured eight people, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani lamented the violence, noting the nine-year anniversary of Police Officer Miosotis Familia's murder.
Officials confirmed Detective Carroll is expected to make a full recovery, while a second officer suffered minor injuries; investigators are conducting a massive video canvas to determine the exact circumstances in Crown Heights.
