Nvidia to buy open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $13bn
The deal is Nvidia’s second-largest, and it would expand the chipmaker’s reach into AI software and open-source tools.
On Thursday, Nvidia agreed to acquire open-source AI platform Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, expanding beyond its core chip business into the broader AI software stack.
Marking a strategic expansion, Nvidia has become the world's most valuable company due to insatiable demand for graphics processing units powering the generative AI boom.
The purchase follows Nvidia's $20 billion acquisition of Groq assets last December and its 2019 purchase of Israeli chipmaker Mellanox for nearly $7 billion.
In a blog post Thursday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang wrote that Hugging Face will "remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem," addressing concerns about market consolidation.
Hugging Face CEO Delangue recently addressed a hacking incident, attributing the attack to "engineering mistakes" and confirming the company used an Nvidia version of a Chinese open model to resolve it.
