New Brunswick Gets $219 Million Loan From Ottawa For Hydroelectric Dam Repair Work
The loan will fund technical studies and planning for a renewal aimed at extending the dam’s life to 2068 and improving grid reliability.
On Tuesday, Ottawa announced a $219 million loan from the Canada Infrastructure Bank to Power for pre-development work on the aging Mactaquac Dam, located west of Fredericton.
The Mactaquac Generation Station, which opened in 1968, faces accelerated concrete deterioration due to a chemical reaction, prompting plans to extend its operational life to 2068.
Ottawa also committed $50 million to upgrade the Salisbury Terminal, a critical substation for regional electricity flow, while total renewal costs for the Mactaquac Dam are estimated at about $9 billion.
Justice Gruben, chief of Kingsclear First Nation, stated his community wants "to be involved in that process directly," signaling Indigenous engagement in the project planning.
Premier Susan Holt noted that reliable energy remains critical for New Brunswick and neighbors like Nova Scotia, as Power continues seeking a private-sector partner for the multibillion-dollar overhaul.
