Nations League: Bruno Fernandes replaces Ronaldo as Portugal captain
Fernandes takes over after Ronaldo left camp and will captain Portugal against Denmark, while Ronaldo says he will reveal why he departed.
- Manchester United playmaker Bruno Fernandes has replaced Cristiano Ronaldo as captain of the Portugal National Team, taking the armband following Ronaldo's decision to leave camp on Wednesday.
- The departure stems from a rift with head coach Jorge Jesus, who benched the 41-year-old for Sunday's entire 2-1 victory over Norway; Ronaldo reportedly felt furious after the decision.
- Ronaldo vowed to reveal "the truth" about his departure, while Rafael Leao has taken over the iconic number 7 shirt following the star's 234th international appearance against Wales.
- Fernandes led the squad for the UEFA Nations League clash against Denmark on Thursday evening, while Ronaldo will miss this match and the subsequent game against Norway.
- Whether the relationship between Jesus and Ronaldo can be repaired remains unclear, as the veteran's international future faces significant doubt after previously considering retirement following a disappointing World Cup.
