Muhammad Ali’s Hometown in Kentucky Honors His Legacy with a New Holiday
On Wednesday, Louisville marked the 10th anniversary of Muhammad Ali's death by launching the inaugural 'Day of Compassion' at the Muhammad Ali Center to honor his humanitarian legacy.
Organizers launched the event to recreate the unity Louisville experienced after Ali's 2016 funeral, encouraging residents to give back through volunteer service projects across the city.
More than 1,000 volunteers participated in over 30 service projects across Smoketown and other neighborhoods, with volunteer Vincent Zialen calling the effort 'the very least we can do' to honor Ali.
Lonnie Ali said during the ceremony that while the world knew her husband as 'The Greatest,' those closest 'understood something much deeper' about his kindness and dedication to uplifting others.
The Muhammad Ali Center plans to make the Day of Compassion an annual event serving as the centerpiece of Ali Fest, which will take place June 7 this year.
