Minnesotans who raise golden shiner minnows now have additional help
The guide summarizes a three-year project and offers production steps, business planning help and lessons learned for minnow growers.
The Minnesota DNR released a new guide to help producers increase Golden Shiner production, addressing high angler demand for the state's most popular baitfish while import restrictions remain in place.
To address import prohibitions designed to prevent invasive species, the Department adapted intensive Arkansas production methods, Sean Sissler, the DNR's commercial aquatic programs and fish health consultant, said.
After a three-year demonstration project with Minnesota Sea Grant and Central Lakes College, the guide details system design and feeding regimens allowing producers to grow market-sized fish 2 to 3 inches long in one summer.
These techniques grant a "two to three month jump" in raising fish compared to traditional pond methods, which typically take two years to reach market size, Sissler said.
Funded by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, the guide assists producers with facility planning and business budgets and is now available on the Minnesota Sea Grant website.
