Minnesota Measles Cases Reach Highest Count Since 1990
All but two cases are in unvaccinated people, and 71% are in children and teens, state health officials said.
On Thursday, Oct. 29, Minnesota officials reported 80 measles cases this year, the state's highest annual total since 1990.
Todd County, home to roughly 25,000 people, accounts for 57 of the 80 cases, while MDH noted vaccination rates dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving communities vulnerable.
Data shows 71% of cases are in children younger than 18, and all but two infected individuals had not received two doses of the MMR vaccine.
Dr. Brooke Cunningham, Minnesota's health commissioner, urged residents to get vaccinated, saying, "We strongly advise anyone who is recommended to receive the MMR vaccine and has not been vaccinated to contact their healthcare provider."
Across the United States, more than 4,500 measles cases have been reported this year, more than double last year's total, prompting officials to expect additional cases in Minnesota in the coming weeks.
