Minnesota climatologist says El Niño could impact ice on lakes this winter
Ojard is concerned that a forecast “Super” El Niño could bring warmer weather to Minnesota this winter.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources forecast warmer-than-average temperatures and below-average snowfall statewide.
Ojard told the Grand Forks Herald that this is the warmest El Niño on record, calling the situation “uncharted territory.”
Ojard warned people to take extra precautions on lakes because the effects on ice conditions are uncertain, although warmer temperatures will not eliminate ice.
