Desan Shipyard Launches First MPMS for Malaysian Coast Guard in Istanbul
The ship will expand enforcement, surveillance and search-and-rescue capabilities as construction stays ahead of schedule, officials said.
- On Saturday, October 3, 2026, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail officiated the launch of MPMS 1 at the Desan Shipyard in Istanbul, witnessed by about 200 guests including Turkish ministers.
- The project reflects the strategic relationship between Malaysia and Turkey, fostering collaboration in shipbuilding, maritime industry development, and technology sharing between the two countries.
- Construction of MPMS 1 has reached approximately 85 percent and is ahead of schedule; the vessel will be the largest in the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency fleet, designed for surveillance and search and rescue operations.
- The ship is expected to begin its voyage home in late January next year and is planned to join the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2027 to showcase the agency's new capabilities.
- Meanwhile, construction of a second vessel has reached 34.05 percent, supporting the MMEA mandate to Control, Protect, and Rescue as Malaysia strengthens its maritime operational capabilities on a phased basis.
