Mercy College of Health Sciences Forms New Clinical Training Initiative with MercyOne
The Dedicated Education Unit keeps students at MercyOne for most clinical training and pairs them with nurses and faculty to build a workforce pipeline.
- Starting this fall, nursing students at Mercy College of Health Sciences will train under a new clinical model called the Dedicated Education Unit through a partnership with MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center.
- Both the college and medical center were founded by the Sisters of Mercy in the 1890s within six years of one another and are located within walking distance in Des Moines.
- Under the DEU model, nursing students train in one consistent clinical environment rather than rotating between systems, with MercyOne nurses serving as 'unit-base clinical instructors' alongside Mercy College faculty.
- The program creates a workforce pipeline for MercyOne while students develop stronger professional connections and deeper clinical knowledge through consistent clinical environments.
- Vincent Salyers, dean of the Joyce E. Lillis School of Nursing at Mercy College, said students will build 'genuine competence and confidence,' while Chief Nursing Officer Chris Courtney at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center said the model helps 'shape the next generation of Iowa's nursing professionals.
