MDA Space to provide lunar landing sensors for space mission
MDA Space will supply two flight units of its LEIA LiDAR sensor for Argonaut’s first lunar landing mission, the company said.
On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, MDA Space received a Pre-Authorisation to Proceed contract from OHB System AG to deliver lunar landing sensors for the European Space Agency's Argonaut spacecraft, formalized at the Farnborough International Airshow.
The Argonaut programme, led by the European Space Agency, represents Europe's first independent lunar landing capability, with the Lunar Descent Element developed by Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales and Leonardo .
MDA Space will supply two flight units of its LEIA Light Detection and Ranging sensor, which enables autonomous landing by identifying hazards with a 40-degree field of view in five seconds.
UK Space Minister Liz Lloyd stated the selection demonstrates "Britain's growing leadership in lunar technology," while Andrew Stanniland, Managing Director of MDA Space UK, noted the partnership underscores autonomous landing expertise.
The flagship mission will transport cargo and scientific instruments to the Moon to support sustained lunar presence, operating in coordination with the NASA Artemis programme.
