MATSON NEW VESSEL CONSTRUCTION PROGRAM MARKS TWO MILESTONES
The $1 billion project will add dual-fuel ships that Matson says are among the largest containerships built in the United States.
- On Tuesday, May 5, 2026, Matson, Inc. and Hanwha Philly Shipyard, Inc. marked construction milestones in Pennsylvania for two Aloha Class containerships, placing the grand block for the Malama and beginning work on the Makena.
- Matson is investing approximately $1 billion in three new LNG-fueled containerships to replace vessels currently serving its Hawaii and China-Long Beach Express routes, aimed at reducing fleet emissions.
- Each 854-foot Jones Act-compliant vessel features a main engine generating 51,000 horsepower and a capacity of 3,220 TEU, enabling speeds exceeding 23 knots.
- The first new vessel is expected in the first quarter of 2027, with subsequent deliveries scheduled for the third quarter of 2027 and the second quarter of 2028.
- Hanwha Philly Shipyard, part of Hanwha Group, has delivered around 50% of all large ocean-going Jones Act commercial ships since 2000, expanding its long-standing relationship with Matson.
