NDSU Announces Marshall Stewart as Next President
Marshall Stewart aims to increase North Dakota State University enrollment from 11,000 to up to 18,000 students and promote debt-free graduation strategies.
- On Monday, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education announced Marshall Stewart, executive vice president for external engagement at Kansas State University, as the 16th president of North Dakota State University.
- The NDSU Presidential Search Committee conducted a national search that drew more than 60 applicants. Finalists participated in 45-minute public interviews Monday, where board members questioned candidates on enrollment growth, research funding, and faculty academic freedom.
- Aiming to grow enrollment from around 11,000 to 15,000 or even 18,000 students, Stewart proposed increasing tuition waivers for out-of-state learners. He also set a goal to help students graduate debt-free through scholarships and partnerships.
- Stewart will begin his new role on May 28, 2026, succeeding interim President Rick Berg. Berg has led the institution since former President David Cook departed to lead Iowa State University.
- Seeking to distinguish the university, Stewart plans to make the institution "uniquely Bison" while targeting top faculty recruitment. Former NDSU President Dean Bresciani noted Stewart will bring candidates to Fargo to see the institution's potential.
