Mara Naaman Advocates for a Shift from “Success” to Meaningful Work
Naaman says 2023 Gallup data show only about one-third of workers are engaged, and she urges people to value learning over external validation.
On Monday, New York-based independent scholar Mara Naaman called for a cultural shift prioritizing process, learning, and human connection over measurable success and productivity.
Research points to rising burnout and disengagement, with more than 40 percent of university students reporting persistent stress linked to performance pressure, and a 2023 Gallup report showing only around one-third of workers globally feel engaged.
Naaman argues that "being 'success-oriented' and focused on how everything in life is monetizable distracts us from what is most important," advocating for fulfillment and purpose over external validation.
To shift this focus, Naaman encourages individuals to "Start where you are" by setting aside time for creative work without goals and reducing screen time to prioritize depth over speed.
Drawing on her experience as a former Williams College professor and Fulbright Scholar in Cairo, Naaman is currently pursuing an MFA in Creative Writing at City College.
