Pasta Powerhouse Barilla Helps Itself to Posh Mac and Cheese Upstart Goodles
- Italian pasta maker Barilla is set to acquire California-based mac-and-cheese brand Goodles, announced Wednesday, following the brand's $88 million valuation after a 2023 funding round.
- Founded in October 2020, Goodles markets products around "premium nutrition, bold flavors, and a brand identity designed to appeal beyond the traditional children's mac and cheese segment," with protein pasta packing 21 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber.
- Goodles will retain its 73-person team with Jen Zeszut remaining as CEO, while Guido Barilla, chairman of the Barilla Group, praised the "strength of the organization, its unity, and its forward-looking mindset."
- Zeszut told The Wall Street Journal that 92 percent of Americans have not tried the brand yet, making the partnership essential to "finding a bigger partner with greater funding" for expansion.
- While some consumers worry Goodles will get "gutted" and ingredients will change, Zeszut dismissed concerns, stating "Just watch us," as the deal awaits regulatory approval before closing.
