After almost three years of relative de-escalation, a series of Turkish initiatives, in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, and Greek military partnerships awaken the discord between the two neighbours.
In the island world of the Aegean, there is a new point of dispute between the two neighbouring countries: Greece declared in July 2025 two marine protection parks in the Ionian and Aegean Seas. Turkey now followed with two own marine parks. Athens protests, the Turkish protected areas crossed Turkish territorial waters and aimed to divide the Aegean Sea.
