'Love Rat' Pilot Denies Killing Wife to Dodge Divorce
Prosecutors say Robert John Crawford lived a double life and stood to lose $1.7 million in superannuation and property in a divorce.
On Monday, former Royal Australian Air Force pilot Robert John Crawford pleaded not guilty in the Brisbane Supreme Court to murdering his wife, Frances Elizabeth Crawford, at their Upper Lockyer home on July 29, 2024.
Crown Prosecutor Chris Cook alleged Crawford, described as a 'love rat' and 'master manipulator,' murdered his wife to protect his $1.7 million superannuation and a $2.6 million property worth stake in a divorce settlement.
Staging the scene at their rural property, prosecutors claim Crawford caused death through strangulation or blunt-force trauma, attempting to frame the incident as a ride-on lawnmower accident to conceal his actions.
Mrs. Crawford set 'deal breakers' regarding infidelity to manage the troubled marriage, while prosecutors allege Crawford led a 'double life' and that she did not feel safe before her death.
Justice Lincoln Crowley scheduled the trial to run for up to three weeks, with the jury expected to visit the home on Wednesday to understand the alleged murder scene and evidence.
