Beavers to Return to Waters Around Loch Ness 500 Years After Last Sighting
NatureScot said the project could boost biodiversity, with more than 73% of consultation respondents backing the plan.
Scottish government agency NatureScot granted Trees for Life and Beaver Trust a licence to release up to 15 beaver family groups around Loch Ness over the next three years, with first reintroductions potentially happening as early as next month.
This project marks the 500th year since beavers were last recorded at Loch Ness; historical records from 1526-27 place them there before they were hunted to extinction several hundred years ago.
More than 73% of respondents supported the proposal during consultation, while NatureScot stated beavers could "significantly improve" biodiversity and help manage climate impacts such as flooding and water scarcity.
While some land managers and residents raised concerns during consultation, NatureScot and the charities will employ existing mitigation schemes to resolve potential conflicts as releases begin.
The project runs until 2029, supporting Scotland's Beaver Strategy 2022-2045 by establishing a healthy, connected population and securing the species' return to the Highlands.
