JetBlue Wins Spirit's LaGuardia Slots for $58.5 Million — Below Spirit's Own Estimate
JetBlue said the slots cover 12 roundtrip flights and any expansion would not begin until 2027, pending court and regulatory approval.
JetBlue Airways won the bankruptcy auction for 22 takeoff and landing slots at New York's LaGuardia Airport, paying $58.5 million for assets previously held by Spirit Airlines.
Spirit Airlines collapsed earlier this year after failed restructuring efforts, triggering a major reshuffling at the congested LaGuardia, where tight airspace restrictions cap overall airline growth.
Frontier emerged as the second-highest bidder at $57.5 million, while the acquisition expands JetBlue's existing footprint of 31 slots with 12 daily departures and arrival capacity.
JetBlue told staff Monday it is "evaluating our plans for the slots" and intends to relocate to the Marine Air Terminal, an Art Deco facility it previously occupied years ago.
A Bankruptcy Court hearing scheduled for Wednesday in White Plains, New York, will address final regulatory approval, with any service expansion not expected until 2027.
