Israel Says Commercial Goods Will Not Enter Gaza, a Major Shutoff for the Hungry Territory – WTOP News
On Wednesday, COGAT announced the suspension of commercial goods entering the Gaza Strip, cutting off a critical food and shelter supply as winter approaches for roughly 2 million Palestinians.
COGAT claimed to be relaying a decision by local merchants tired of Hamas taxes and threats; however, Nahed Sheheiber, head of Gaza's private truckers union, disputed this, stating Israel imposed the restriction.
Sheheiber met with Gaza's Economy Ministry regarding fees of 10,000 shekels per truck, which Undersecretary Khaled Al-Raqab described as a 'donation' for civil servants, not a tax.
Gaza's population of roughly 2 million requires 250 truckloads daily, far below the 600 required by the U.S.-brokered ceasefire, and humanitarian workers warn aid alone cannot meet needs without functional markets.
Shaina Low of the Norwegian Refugee Council warned that even small disruptions could reverse recent gains, as most families in Gaza lack sufficient food with conditions remaining at crisis levels.
