Iowa community colleges to use state grants for new regional career training centers

Two colleges will build regional centers that expand career academies and serve 11 school districts and two nonpublic schools, officials said.

  • Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and The Iowa Department of Education awarded $2 million in Career Academy Incentive Fund grants to Iowa Western Community College and Ellsworth Community College to expand career training for high school students.
  • Both institutions will use the grants to establish regional centers connecting technical education with postsecondary programs, requiring participation from at least 120 students or four school districts in four career academies.
  • Located at the Transportation and Logistics Center, Iowa Western Community College will welcome students from seven school districts to attend academies in welding, HVAC, and automotive maintenance.
  • Ellsworth Community College will offer construction, agriculture, and business administration academies, with Iowa Valley Community College District President Anne Howsare Boyens stating the funding helps "prepare workforce-ready students who will contribute to Iowa."
  • These academies aim to meet Iowa employers' workforce needs through high-demand training, which Reynolds noted helps "build the next generation of workforce leaders in our communities" while students are still in school.
