Iowa Man Charged After Shooting that Killed Woman, Injured State Trooper on Tuesday
Authorities say the trooper was shot after responding to a shots-fired call, and a woman’s death is being investigated as a homicide.
On Tuesday, August 18, 2026, an Iowa State Patrol trooper was shot in the 200 block of SW 6th Street in Stuart, Iowa, after responding to a report of gunfire; authorities also discovered a deceased woman at the scene.
Court documents identified the shooter as 46-year-old Austin Nichols Reed of Stuart, alleging he approached the victim from behind and fired a shotgun, then attempted to shoot another person before the weapon malfunctioned.
Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Adam DeCamp said "An Iowa State trooper was among the first officers to arrive." Local resident Susan Hunter described the area as a "very quiet neighborhood" and said the incident was "unexpected."
The injured trooper was transported to a Des Moines-area hospital, though his condition remains unknown; authorities are treating the woman's death as a homicide with the Iowa DCI assisting in the investigation.
Stuart Police Department officials confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the community following the suspect's arrest, extending condolences to the victim's family and support to the injured trooper during the ongoing investigation.
