Iowa 5-year-old raises $5,000 to cover dog adoption fees before Christmas
Tucker Bell raised $5,000 by selling treats to cover all dog adoption fees at Marion County Humane Society, inspired by dogs waiting months for homes.
A central Iowa boy, Tucker Bell, raised $5,000 to waive adoption fees for all dogs at the Marion County Humane Society before Christmas.
Seeing long-staying dogs spend months or years in kennels inspired Tucker Bell, whose family regularly volunteers walking and socializing shelter dogs at Marion County Humane Society.
Since Thanksgiving, Tucker raised funds by selling hot chocolate and his mother's homemade treats, and Leslie Vanderlinden, president of the Marion County Humane Society, said it was his idea.
The shelter will keep regular hours but close on Christmas, and Tucker Bell hopes families will visit, consider adoption, and meet prospective adopters at the Marion County Humane Society.
Local media reported that KCCI covered the story, and Marion County Humane Society officials say the effort could encourage adoptions and give long-waiting dogs second chances.
