Infantino promises further FIFA support for African football
Infantino said FIFA will continue investing $1 billion in Africa over 10 years as CAF leaders voiced unanimous backing for his re-election bid.
- On Thursday, FIFA President Gianni Infantino secured unconditional backing from all 54 African member associations for his re-election bid ahead of the March 18, 2027, vote in Rabat.
- At a strategy meeting in Cape Verde, Confederation of African Football President Patrice Motsepe confirmed unanimous support, citing Infantino's investment through the FIFA Forward programme of one billion dollars in Africa over 10 years.
- Defending Infantino's integrity, Motsepe stated, "For us, governance, ethics, transparency and due process are a matter of life and death," while urging focus on youth academies to help an African nation win the World Cup.
- Meanwhile, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin confirmed he will seek re-election, removing a high-profile challenger, as former Switzerland defender Ramon Vega intends to stand against Infantino.
- The endorsement follows Infantino's decision earlier this year to shelve a controversial plan to sell a financial stake in FIFA tournaments, which had led many European and North American federations to withdraw endorsements.
