Reuters: In the AI era, Apple's strengths may become its constraints
Apple is considering outside AI models as open-source tools and faster product cycles reshape competition, analysts said.
On Wednesday, Apple's long-standing strategy of tight control over hardware and software faces mounting pressure as the AI era increasingly demands rapid iteration and broad developer access.
Apple's disciplined, integrated model generated nearly $210 billion in iPhone revenue last year and a $110 billion services business, yet experts warn these strengths could become constraints if the next era rewards openness.
While open-source software like OpenClaw attracts users globally, it remains raw and vulnerable; Nvidia is adapting the technology into a commercial product called NemoClaw with necessary safeguards for business environments.
Apple appointed hardware leader John Ternus to guide its AI efforts, signaling belief in tightly integrated devices, though Timothy Hubbard, assistant professor of management at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business, warned the firm's control strengths could become constraints.
Gene Munster, analyst at Deepwater Asset Management, wrote that "staying true to Apple's culture should allow Apple to pursue AI more aggressively without compromising on quality," positioning the firm to balance innovation with established standards.
