IBM’s Anderon Finalizes $1B Chips Award with US Commerce Department (IBM:NYSE)
The award will support R&D and expand production-scale quantum wafer manufacturing as IBM-backed Anderon begins running first wafers through its Albany facility.
- On Wednesday, Anderon LLC, an IBM company, finalized a $1 billion award under the CHIPS and Science Act with the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Albany-based venture operates as a pure-play quantum wafer foundry.
- A letter of intent signed in May by the Department and IBM preceded this agreement, backed by an additional $1 billion investment from IBM to strengthen domestic quantum manufacturing capacity.
- Anderon CEO Mukesh Khare said the agreement "strengthens our ability to deliver the manufacturing scale the quantum industry needs." The facility provides specialized wafers for superconducting qubit arrays and quantum input/output signaling components.
- The award accelerates R&D efforts to translate advanced research into commercial-grade quantum wafer technologies. Customers gain access to a production-scale 300mm fab purpose-built for quantum processors.
- Future expansions will allow the foundry to support additional quantum modalities. Jay Gambetta, Director of IBM Research & IBM Fellow, noted the foundation allows IBM to "execute and accelerate progress toward the next era of quantum computing.
