Huge fire engulfs historic Co Down convent: Live updates
Smoke and flames were seen as firefighters worked to contain the blaze at the historic convent, which was recently listed for £400,000.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service extinguished a large blaze at the former Convent of Mercy on Stream Street in Downpatrick on Monday morning, concluding operations after officials determined the fire was deliberately started on Sunday evening.
Built in the 1870s, the convent went on the market last October for £400,000 with planning permission for flats, after having 'stood derelict for some time' and previously selling for £175,000 in 2019.
At the height of the incident, 70 firefighters deployed 10 appliances, breathing apparatus, and aerial ladder jets to combat the fire, while PSNI officers attended to manage traffic and assist emergency operations.
SDLP South Down MLA Colin McGrath described the fire as "difficult to watch," noting the building "remains a beautiful and iconic part of our town's skyline," while councillor Conor Galbraith observed the roof had caved in.
Police and NIFRS are holding the scene as investigations into the deliberately started fire continue, while officials have urged members of the public to avoid the area to ensure ongoing safety.
