Among the thousands of species in the Amazon rainforest, a small group of 15 to 25 tree species alone ensures a large part of forest regeneration and carbon absorption, Fernando Elias, a researcher at the Emilio Goeldi Museum in the northern Brazilian state of Pará, told AFP.
"It's fantastic to see how resilient the forest is. These species are giving the Amazon a new lease on life after the total disruption caused by deforestation," he said.
