How a senior thesis changed classrooms across America
Kopp’s thesis proposed recruiting top graduates into teaching, and Teach for America has since trained more than 72,000 people, the group said.
In 1989, Princeton University senior Wendy Kopp proposed a teaching corps in her thesis, launching Teach for America, which has since trained more than 72,000 people to lead classrooms across the U.S.
Teach for America offers two-year, full-time teaching positions in schools nationwide, providing recruits professional experience and benefits while building relationships with students and communities.
Aneesh Sohoni, CEO of Teach for America, originally dreamed of becoming a lawyer before joining the program. "Once I met students, I realized I wanted to do this the rest of my life," Sohoni said.
First-Generation immigrant Alejandro Diaz-Granados persevered through the pandemic to creatively reach students without computers at home, crediting teaching with providing community and purpose.
Wendy Kopp, who led Teach for America for 24 years, now serves as CEO of Teach for All, expanding her mission to recruit and support educators globally.
