Home prices fall in most major US cities as housing market cools: See where
Realtor.com said nationwide price per square foot fell 1.8% from a year earlier, with declines in 36 of the 50 largest metros.
A Realtor.com analysis found the median listing price per square foot fell 1.8% nationwide in August, marking the 10th consecutive month of annual declines across the nation's 50 largest metro areas.
Realtor.com senior economist Jake Krimmel said 2020-22 "boomtowns" are giving back pandemic-era gains as sellers adjust prices to attract buyers facing high mortgage rates and affordability challenges.
The steepest declines were recorded in Austin, down 8.1%, followed by Tampa, down 5.6%, and Memphis, down 4.1%, as pandemic-boom markets adjust to new conditions.
San Francisco's median listing price fell 3.9%, yet active listings dropped 16.3% in July and the median price remained high at $908,700, signaling sustained market competition.
Contrasting the broader decline, prices rose in Providence, Rhode Island, at 9.3%, followed by Indianapolis at 4.4% and Chicago at 3.6%, demonstrating resilience in select markets.
