New Mexico Man Risks Life to Save Families From Floodwaters: 'I Jumped In'
He went door to door and helped families escape as neighbors say his warning saved vehicles, pets and relatives.
As floodwaters swept through Bloomfield, New Mexico, last week, Joseph Barrela, a homeless man living beneath a bridge, went door to door warning families and helping neighbors escape to safety.
Barrela had been observing rising water levels days prior to the extreme flooding. He prioritized waking families, knowing the water would climb fast before the danger became apparent to others.
"We were actually sleeping inside, and then Joseph Barrela, he came and knocked on the door, pounded, made sure he waited here till we were awake," Lonnie Campbell said. After evacuating neighbors, Barrela attempted to rescue a truck driver and nearly drowned when swept away by the current.
On Tuesday, Barrela began volunteering at First Baptist Church to assist flood victims. Executive Pastor Joel Gunn said the church is distributing essential supplies and preparing to repair damaged homes.
For San Juan County residents still recovering from flooding, information on resources and recovery assistance is available through the county's Office of Emergency Management.
