Adorable Capybara Pup Born at Edinburgh Zoo Becomes First in Scotland for 18 Years
Keepers are monitoring the vulnerable newborn, which will get a first health check in coming weeks and later learn herd behaviors.
Edinburgh Zoo announced the birth of a capybara pup, the first born in Scotland in 18 years, currently bonding with parents Luna and Rodney at the Royal Zoological Society facility.
Luna and Rodney are first-time parents managing the new addition. Native to South America, capybaras typically thrive in wetlands and forests, showcasing social behaviors within their herd.
Weighing between 1.5kg and 2.5kg, the pup is roughly the same size as a six-pack of Irn-Bru. Keepers note the baby is slowly becoming braver and exploring its enclosure, closely followed by its mother.
Keepers are keeping a "close eye" on the pup, as they are vulnerable during their first few weeks. Staff expect to determine the youngster's sex and choose a name during a health check in the coming weeks.
Animal keeper Jonny Appleyard urges visitors to see the pup soon, noting, "Capybara pups grow up quickly so we recommend visiting the zoo soon if you want to see the new arrival at their cutest stage.
