These are extremely unusual pictures from the Pongau community Wagrain in Salzburg. As the fire brigade informed, it was so heavily hailed on Monday evening that white hailstorms were formed on the streets. Traffic was massively stalled – there was hardly any way of getting through.

A violent late summer storm surprised Wagrain in the Pongau on Monday evening. Up to 20 centimeters of hail required the use of clearing vehicles as in the deepest winter. While the clean-up work is running, an expert explains why only the small Pongau municipality was affected by the hail.
A violent thunderstorm with storm, hail and heavy rain on Monday evening led to 29 missions by eleven fire brigades in Pongau and Pinzgau. Enormous hail volumes required heavy clearance vehicles in Wagrain.
In Wagrain (Pongau, Salzburg) the last day of August could almost have been confused with a day in the deepest winter. In the early evening, a storm hit the village - and left a thick layer of hail.
