Hackers steal nearly $10,000 from a Georgia family ordering takeout
Bonchon is investigating after Nina Lloyd says a checkout redirect led to a fake verification page and a $9,900 wire transfer, she said.
- On Tuesday, Georgia mother Nina Lloyd lost $9,900 after a Bonchon takeout order redirected her to a fraudulent verification page during checkout. She discovered the theft minutes later via a wire transfer notification.
- While placing her order, Lloyd was redirected to a third-party verification page that appeared legitimate. She had previously believed ordering directly through the website was safer than using delivery apps like Doordash or Uber Eats.
- The stolen funds were a gift from a recently deceased aunt, intended to support the family after her husband lost his job last week. "And now we have literally nothing," Lloyd said.
- Lloyd is currently working with her bank to recover the stolen money, though she has not received a guarantee of reimbursement. She hopes her experience warns others about increasingly sophisticated online scams.
- After reporter Chase Houle contacted the corporate office, Bonchon began investigating the incident. The company has not yet provided information regarding the security breach that enabled the fraudulent redirection.
