Great British Bake Off winner reveals surprise use for conkers
Nancy Birtwhistle says about 10 conkers make 1 litre of detergent, and the leftover pulp can be composted.
Sunday Times bestselling author and Great British Bake Off winner Nancy Birtwhistle, from Hull, has shared a recipe for making 'free' laundry detergent using conkers as the autumn season begins.
Freezing conkers before use makes them easier to work with and prevents the finished detergent from separating, Birtwhistle explained, adding that she tends to freeze them for later use.
The recipe requires using around 10 conkers per litre, covering the chunks with boiling water in a jug, and leaving them to soak before straining the liquid into a bottle.
For washing, Birtwhistle suggests pouring 50ml of the homemade detergent into a cap and placing it in the drum, while recommending a cold wash at 20 degrees.
Leftover conker pulp can be composted for environmental benefit, and users can add a few drops of perfume to the detergent if desired to enhance its scent.
