Gov. Sherrill’s Budget Plan to Prioritize Education and Affordability
Governor Sherrill aims to close a $3 billion deficit by prioritizing youth mental health, veteran homelessness, and education while avoiding tax increases, officials said.
- In a March 10 address, Governor Mikie Sherrill will present her first budget to the New Jersey Legislature, addressing an about $3 billion structural deficit while pledging no tax increases.
- With mounting state obligations, rising Medicare, state pension and school funding costs alongside the end of federal pandemic relief funding have created severe fiscal pressure, state budget officials say.
- The proposal includes $33 million for youth mental health, $11 million for Bringing Veterans Home, and a record $12.4 billion for K-12 education, including Preschool Aid and tutoring.
- With the first Stay NJ payments going out, Treasurer Aaron Binder said he would not rule out cuts despite Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin's support, while roughly $900 million will be needed to maintain the program and negotiations will intensify before the June 30 deadline.
- The FY 2027 budget, which runs July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, will fund state departments and programs, and the Sherrill administration's affordability and accountability agenda will modernize permitting and energy programs.
