Google chief scientist Jeff Dean leaving in AI reshuffle after 27 years at company

The stealth startup has backing from Khosla Ventures, Radical Ventures and Google, and it aims to automate scientific discovery for small teams.

  • On Wednesday, Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat announced they are leaving Google after 27 years to launch Discovery Loop, a public benefit corporation focused on accelerating scientific and engineering discoveries.
  • Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai confirmed Google will invest in the startup and provide compute power for the first year, though he attempted multiple meetings to retain the departing engineers.
  • Venture capitalist Vinod Khosla and Radical Ventures led the funding, backing the team's vision to automate research rather than simply using AI as a tool for Humans. "Humans have been using AI to do research, not using AI to be a researcher," Khosla said.
  • Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis is moving to a chairman role, while Koray Kavukcuoglu, currently DeepMind CTO, assumes day-to-day leadership of the AI division and will lead Gemini 4 development.
  • Operating in stealth without hired staff or office space, Discovery Loop's founders aim to build systems capable of out-inventing large research organizations through deep automation of the discovery process.
