Atlanta’s new giant pandas will make their public debut after a 2-year absence
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrive on a 10-year loan from China and will greet visitors after two years without pandas at the zoo.
On Friday, giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang make their public debut at Zoo Atlanta inside the newly renovated Blank Panda Grove, ending a two-year absence for the species.
The enclosure remained empty for two years after four previous pandas returned to China, ending a 25-year partnership; Zoo Atlanta is now one of three United States facilities housing giant pandas.
A $6 million renovation funded by the Woodruff Foundation updated the habitat, while the 6-year-old pandas arrived from China in September after a 16-hour journey for a 10-year loan.
To help guests distinguish the pair, the Panda Care Team noted, "Ping Ping is noticeably larger than Fu Shuang and has a Y down the bridge of his nose," while Fu Shuang has a rounder face.
Zoo Atlanta President and CEO Raymond B. King leads an opening ceremony at 8 a.m. today inside the Blank Panda Grove, celebrating the pandas as symbols of peace and harmony.
